Books about perseverance to get you through quarantine

booksInstead of hoarding toilet paper, I seem to be acquiring more and more books. (“That’s so surprising,” said no one anywhere). Many of you are also using this time to read – although I understand there’s a bit of naming soup cans and sewing goldfish pillows going on, too. Whatever makes you, your lunch and your goldfish happy. But for my fellow book lovers, here are some recommended reads about perseverance that might hit the spot during tough times:

Hatchet – Gary Paulsen

Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is no stranger to problems, but when he is the sole survivor of a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness, he has to find whole new depths within himself. His old worries are soon replaced by questions like “Will this bear mangle me?” or “Will I ever eat anything ever again?” This book is often called a contemporary classic for a reason and is one of my favorite survival tales.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go! – Dr. Seuss

Some people might say if you’re old enough to be interested in this blog, then you’re too old to read Dr. Seuss. Those same people might think the Dursleys were the true heroes of the Harry Potter series. Dr. Seuss’ books often focused on real issues and deep ideas, and this story was no exception. The protagonist is repeatedly rewarded for pushing on, even when he doesn’t know what’s coming. And who doesn’t love an elephant in roller skates?

The Book Thief – Markus Zusak

A powerful book that is not for the faint of heart, The Book Thief is a coming-of-age story that follows a young girl named Liesel in World War II Germany. It is not an easy world to survive and danger is constantly lurking, especially when her foster parents are harboring a Jewish refugee in their basement. (That guy was handling a seriously intense quarantine). While Liesel finds comfort in stealing books and sharing them with others, she also finds strength in friendship and love during a time of violence and war.

A Dog’s Way Home – W. Bruce Cameron

When it comes to determination and overcoming overwhelming odds, rescue dog Bella is a champion. Separated from her person through a misunderstanding, Bella treks through hundreds of miles of Colorado wilderness – making unlikely friends, fighting prejudice and struggling to survive. Told through her sweet, determined and hilarious viewpoint, Bella reminds us how simple yet strong love can be. And, also, how weird people must look to dogs.

The Graveyard Book – Neil Gaiman

Another fantastic creation by the master of modern fairy tales, The Graveyard Book is a classic story of good vs. evil and, of course, perseverance. Nobody “Bod” Owens is like any other kid – except, you know, that his parents were murdered and he was raised by ghosts. But while the graveyard might seem scary to some, it turns out the world of the living is the true threat for Bod.
